NYSCF Innovator Awards for Early Career Investigators

The New York Stem Cell Foundation is offering a total of $24.5M in funding to up to 17 investigators to launch their own laboratories.

Due date for applications: August 27, 2010

NYSCF invites applications from early career investigators to cultivate research that will explore the therapeutic potential of stem cells derived from humans and model organisms. The main goal of this initiative is to foster truly innovative research with the probability for transforming the field of stem cell research, and advance the understanding and eventual use of stem cells for the treatment of human disease. In addition to providing funding, NYSCF would partner with the investigator to advance translational goals of the research, and would act as aggregator in packaging intellectual property, from multiple sources if applicable, to make it available to an industry partner who would develop it.

The award provides a maximum of $300K ($100K for salary for a Principal Investigator/Junior Faculty and $200K in discretionary funding) per annum for a period of up to five years. The award does not provide institutional overhead.

Successful applicants will be based in or have access to the NYSCF laboratory and resources and will have the opportunity to present at the annual NYSCF conference. However, it is not a requirement to work in the NYSCF laboratory or in New York. To be eligible, candidates must:

  • Have completed one or more of the following degrees or its equivalent: M.D., Ph.D.
  • Have completed Post-doctoral training
  • Hold a tenure track or similar position or have accepted such a position
  • Be within 5 years of starting as a tenure track professor or of initially holding a comparable position
  • Have demonstrated ability to independently supervise staff and research
  • Have a publication record containing articles that are innovative and high impact
  • Have demonstrated or strategized true innovation for translation of basic sciences to a clinical setting;
  • If applicable, demonstrate an appropriate working environment and availability of resources
  • Be based within the United States
  • Be a U.S. citizen, U.S. legal resident or a foreign applicant with appropriate visa documentation, as required by U.S. Immigration, valid for the course of the award.

The applications should include:

  • A research proposal of not more than five pages (in 12-point type)
  • The candidate’s curriculum vitae, not to exceed three pages
  • A one-page summary of the candidate’s research accomplishments
  • A list of the candidate’s five most significant publications
  • Three references from mentors and/or institutions
  • Details of other support

The research proposal should contain a summary, specific aims and goals, experimental design, timeline, significance and relevance to the translation to the clinic. For applications using human embryonic stem cells or human tissue, the candidate must obtain appropriate Embryonic Stem Cell Research Oversight Committee (ESCRO) or human subjects research approvals in advance of the award start date.

Please submit applications by email before 5:00 PM (EST) on August 27th, 2010 to investigators@nyscf.org. Applications should be sent as one electronic file (pdf) with components in the order listed above. Finalists will be contacted in September and announced in October 2010.

International Travel Awards

1st NRW Stem Cell School Travel Award

The Stem Cell Network North Rhine Westfalia is offering two travel awards to junior scientists coming from the member networks of the ICSCN.

Workshop dates and location: November 30 - December 5 2009, Münster, North Rhine‐Westphalia, Germany

This course will provide intense gain of knowledge by theoretical and practical experiences in small groups of 3 people maximum. During this week‐long program diverse contemporary aspects of stem cell biology will be put across the 20 participants. All lectures and workshops will be presented in English.

Participants can choose to attend lectures and workshops on:

  • Microinjection approaches on animal models in neural stem cell research
  • Mouse embryo micromanipulation
  • ES cell culture and molecular characterization
  • Isolation and flow cytometric characterization of mesenchymal stem cells from bone marrow
  • Molecular characterization of adult and cancer stem cells
  • Germcell culture and Gametogenesis in vitro
  • Ultrastructural analysis of stem cells and gametes by electron microscopy
  • In vitro and in vivo analysis of normal and leukemic hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells

and more.

Evening lectures given by experts as Oliver Brüstle (Bonn), Hans Schöler (Münster), Martin Zenke (Aachen) and others will complete the program.

Application procedure: The NRW Stem Cell School is open to postdoctoral researchers (completion of PhD/M.D. not after September 30, 2004) working in stem cell biology or related fields. For application the registration form together with your CV, publication list and an application letter indicating the motivation, interest and experience of the applicant (max. one page DIN A4) is needed.

Terms: Please submit your application by October 1st 2009. Application materials must be sent by email to the attention of: Mrs. Ira Herrmann at info@stemcells.nrw.de. Don't forget to indicate your favourite courses with our modules form.
